Present Simple Tense – Rules

  1. In English we use tense to talk about time. It is a form of the verb that allows you to express time.
  2. The simple present tense is one of the four forms of present tense in English.
  3. The four main forms of the present tense in English language are (1) Simple Present Tense (2) Present Continuous Tense (3) Present Perfect Tense (4) Present Perfect Continuous Tense.

Rules:
1.The simple present (also called present simple or present indefinite) tense in English is used to describe regular actions, habits or general truths.
2.In simple present tense, the affirmative form is formed by using the root verb form or by adding –s or –es to the end of the root form of the verb.
3.Root verb form is also known as main verb form or 1st form of the verb. (go – went – gone)
4.If the subject of simple present sentence is 1st person singular number, simple present affirmative form is formed by adding –s or –es to the main form.
5.We use do or does to form interrogative and negative forms of simple present sentences.
6.We use does for the third person singular (she / he / it / John / My mom / this flower etc.) and do for the others.
7.We don’t add -s or -es to the main verb in the negative or interrogative sentences. 1st form of the verb is always used in negative and interrogative sentences.
